weeks but it was incredibly hard Gluten is in EVERYTHING Cakes cookies cereals gravy salad dressings and pasta the list goes on My eating habits were being turned upside down but within days I noticed a significant difference My head felt lighter and clearer my stomach wasn t bloated and best of all that consistent anxious feeling that pressing on my chest was gone Then I saw a Twix and without thinking of it I had ingested gluten Next day I woke up with a stomachache and instant anxiety attack for no good reason I stopped ingesting gluten but I messed up often No I succumb to temptation often I knew better but when you are sitting at East Side Mario s and everyone is scarfing down some delicious warm garlic bread it s hard to say no At least that is what I thought at the time and then I read It Starts with Food It is not hard Don t you dare tell us this is hard Beating cancer is hard Birthing a baby is hard Losing a parent is hard Drinking your coffee black Is Not Hard You ve done harder things than this Damn They were right I was comparing how difficult not stuffing my face full of delicious glutinous cake slather in creamy sugar milk also known as icing to beating cancer or having a baby I felt ridiculous I was stronger than this so I decided Jan 1 st 2015 was to be my first day of my first Whole30 I knew it was going to be difficult so I prepared myself as best as I could and each step I took felt like I was healing both my body and mind I cleaned my whole house and removed every item that I couldn t have I felt clean I felt like I was being offered a new beginning and that felt amazing I thought I would be scared but all the work I put into this all the positive emphasis I had now placed on keeping myself healthy gave me a huge boost in self confidence and moving forward I knew everything I did every effort I took would be worth it For 30 days I took time for myself I planned meals woke up early to make them and ensured I had enough time to enjoy the food I put into my mouth I told myself that me feeling healthy and understand the effects food can have on my body would be worth every bite of alfredo I didn t have After 15 days my stomach felt magical but it wasn t until almost 30 days in that my partner mentioned to me that he hadn t seen me have an anxiety attack or feel depressed I had felt so great that I did not even realize I had not felt terrible Years of anxiety years of depression I thought this would have been the first change I noticed but instead I

my brothers and then they are saying how mean he is and how much they hate him and i always feel like im being pushed and pulled i try to soo hard to keep the peace in my family and i end up getting really stressed out and overwhelmed i get so overwhemled that i started cutting i know i need help i dont want to remeber my teenage years as being depressed and cutting myself thanks Bereavement and Cutting A First let me start by expressing my condolences for losing your mother Losing an important person in your life especially one who offers support and love is very difficult It sounds as though you are sad for at least 2 reasons 1 you no longer have your mother in your life and 2 the rest of your family are fighting It seems like your home life became more stressful and at a time when you probably needed extra support Stress can make people more irritable which makes me wonder whether the arguments between your father and your brothers reflects their own difficulty with moving on In any case I completely understand your concern I think there are at least two options to consider First you can seek individual counseling or treatment yourself This might help you learn more effective coping strategies and would also provide an opportunity to feel understood and supported The other option is family counseling When a family sees a mental health professional together they can discuss and resolve their issues in a more contained and calming environment The mental health worker can also provide objective feedback and offer advice Of course you would have to speak with your family first about this possibility In terms of trying to find a mental health worker try visiting

  • Caffeine and anxiety are not friends | mindyourmind.ca
verge of panic All of this for no other reason than simply caffeine Not kidding I could be having a great day and not be feeling any of those things otherwise A little caffeine and BAM One time about 4 or 5 years ago before I realized how much of an enemy caffeine is to me I ate one of those giant caffeine balls from the gym They re like big gob stoppers or sour ball gums but bigger and made of all caffeine I was laying on my couch heart beating out of my chest freaking out and panicking for no good reason Needless to say that was a very bad idea and probably when I realized that the stuff does NOT like me So if you have anxiety and you drink caffeine whether it s in coffee tea or pop form I would seriously consider doing an experiment cut out the caffeine completely for 1 2 weeks and see if you feel any different If you notice you re not anxious anymore maybe you should really consider cutting out caffeine from your life If you re saying to yourself No Way because you re relying on caffeine for a boost in energy here are some things you can replace it with Vitamin B12 and Ginseng are natural energy boosters check with your doctor first to make sure these are right for you before using though Ensure you are getting enough sleep If your sleeping habits are decent and you are generally healthy you likely don t need caffeine for energy here s an article on Good Sleep Habits Exercise can feel super tiring and exhausting if you re just starting out but once you get into a routine exercise will actually give you MORE energy Eat healthy Cut

  • In defense of facebook... | mindyourmind.ca
do Facebook That statement is made with the same emphasis and dogmatic assurance that many of my colleagues reserve for their highway driving policies Oh I don t drive on the highway It is far too dangerous What I will not do is suggest that Facebook is for everyone Some people are proactive about calling up their friends writing and emailing regularly or scrapbooking so the social utility of it is redundant If you don t need it don t sign up That makes total sense to me But if you don t sign up accept that you might be missing out on a few things You may not have the chance to reconnect with old school friends you may never see pictures of distant family members or you might not get an invite to a few Stag and Does That s a natural consequence of not being part of a social network having an unlisted phone number or no active email might result in the same sorts of issues But that isn t even the real issue Most intelligent adults accept that by choosing not to embrace a new form of technology they may inconvenience themselves or others that have chosen to stay current The bigger issue is this absurd backlash this intense anti Facebook elitism To those anti Facebook elitists here are my responses These kids have no idea how to interact face to face anymore Bull I teach kids and they are perfectly capable of interacting with each other They don t always do it in front of you but I never interacted comfortably with peers in front of adults when I was a younger and there were no social networking sites at all back then Okay maybe MySpace but that was really just something for crappy bands to use as free advertisement And last time I checked being able to communicate online over distances was pretty damn important in most jobs so I would be much more hesitant to hire someone that has been cloistered away from computers their whole life Facebook is dangerous Anything is dangerous if you enter into it ignorantly and that includes driving your car on the highway My dad insisted that I take driving lessons and he made sure to show me how to drive defensively every time that we were in the car together All of the safeguards you could ever need are on Facebook I make a point of listing them all off to my students each and every year that I teach giving concrete examples of how predators could use things like publically accessible information about their location Kids waste so much of their time on Facebook Yep they do And you wasted an equal amount of time yakking on the phone or sitting on your friend s bed talking about the next school dance The nature of youth is that much of it is frittered away on silly things Your experience was no more inspired than that
