lately that I m just not talking about it with most of the people in my life My therapist hears about it but few others do just because I don t think anyone can do anything to help I don t want to share my pain because it feels like mine alone A friend asked me today how I m doing and I said Okay even though it was a lie I wasn t suicidal so that means I m better than I have been What s the basis for comparison Sometimes it s just easier to lie than to try to explain the inexplicable My life feels like a record on repeat A few hours ago I actually caught myself using a word I rarely use love I said out loud and to no one I love thunderstorms I was sitting on the porch with Digby sporting a wicked smile as the thunderclaps roared louder and louder as they approached After moving inside to avoid getting wet I positioned myself in front of my bedroom window so I could sit on the bed and peer at the sky As I watched the trees sway wildly in the wind I took pleasure in recognizing destruction that wasn t all in my head When was the last time you heard anyone tell the clouds to stop raining People complain to each other about the weather but everyone knows complaining to the sky won t change a thing Thunderstorms are natural normal and necessary And the sky doesn t apologize before raining it doesn t beat itself up for getting everyone wet It just does its thing After marveling at a feeling bigger than myself and definitely out of my control I felt my left elbow being nuzzled Looking over I saw

home because it feels too much for me to go into a workplace for set hours every day I don t date because that too is far far outside of my comfort zone Am I being realistic about what I can handle considering my mental health or am I keeping myself at the sidelines of life I guess it s a bit of both Real relationships would help me feel fully human and less like a ghost but the only relationship I ve been able to dedicate myself to is that with my therapist That sounds extremely depressing but at least I have that relationship with her If I can trust one person than maybe I can trust two and then three and then four if I m lucky When I say trust I mean trust with the full reality of my life and my history Almost all of my friends know that I have Post Traumatic Stress Disorder but very few people know what my biggest traumas actually are I m scared to burden them with my dark history I wish I didn t have the history that I do so why inflict those images on other people Yet I know that if one of my friends came to me when they were upset I would want them to feel like they could tell me everything I know I could handle it because I love them and together we d make it through So shouldn t I be able to reverse that and trust that my friends would do the same for me It s so hard to trust that it would work it feels so much safer to be alone Old habits die hard I did manage to take a baby step in that direction a week ago however I d been bawling my eyes out partly because I didn t feel brave enough to call even a crisis line for help I wasn t in danger of hurting myself but I did need support I started catastrophizing thinking that this fall is going to be a very hard time for me and how on Earth am I gonna get through it without reaching out for help Just as I hit the height of my hysteria I heard a knock on the door Since the downstairs buzzer wasn t pressed I knew it was one of my neighbours from my building all of whom I really like and consider to be my friends If I was looking for a sign that I have people around me who care that knock was it So instead of hiding like I normally would I wiped my eyes and timidly opened the door It was more than obvious that I d been crying and I could see that fact register on my friend s face as she spoke Are you okay I assured her that I was fine repeating it over and over I smiled and changed the subject and found that

mental health in the news stigma reduction and anything else relevant or inspirational Her fav quote is you can t get what you want if you don t ask for it Video While most ads for skin care hair products beauty products perfumes clothing and the list goes on and on bombard young girls and women with images of what a beautiful woman should look like Dove s Self Esteem Fund is working hard to dispel these expectations of unattainable standards Mental health disorders are at epidemic proportions in our society with young people aged 15 24 having the highest rate of mental health episodes and low self esteem is a huge contributor Body image has a direct impact on self esteem if you hate your body it affects you physically emotionally and mentally As a society we have been socialized to place beauty as defined by the media among one of our highest priorities And we have become perfectionists never feeling quite good enough needing to lose more and more weight even if it means starving ourselves or throwing meals up increasing our breast size or our lip size or changing the entire structure of our face Focusing on this ever growing social problem of low self esteem that impacts so many of us Dove is aiming to promote social change with their Campaign For Real Beauty The campaign aims to dispel the myths of falsely created beauty through the use of airbrushing in advertising and to create a cultural counter effect of the unrealistic expectations the media has set up for girls and women While we still have a long way to go as a society in undoing the harm that the image of the ideal woman has created this campaign is a great start to switching the

where you do fit in You might not like the kids at a new school any better than the ones at your current school but there is a chance that you will like them better You ll never know if you don t take that chance and when you are unhappy the best thing you can do for yourself is create change It s the only way to feel better Yes your parents are making you feel like depression is shameful but it isn t There is nothing wrong with you and you don t need to hide Even though you feel so down every day don t give up on the things that bring you joy or used to bring you joy Keep going to dance classes keep playing basketball keep your dream of being a counselor at summer camp Even if these things don t bring you as much joy as they used to they will bring you some joy If you give them up then all you will have is your pain Now some words on self destruction Yes you have been using it as a tool to get through your days and it has worked for you a little or else you wouldn t have been doing it It does however keep you depressed When you self injure you are becoming your own abuser You are confirming in your mind all of the bad things people have told you about yourself Those people are wrong and you are letting them win by siding with them Don t side with them Hurting yourself only makes you weak in spirit so that when the next person comes along that wants to hurt you you won t have the strength to resist Plus years down the road you re going to get a beautiful tattoo over some of the scars on your arm People will wonder why the tattooed skin isn t smooth and you will realize how much better the tattoo would look had you not given yourself those scars In addition to self injury I know you will battle with food Everyone warns teens about the dangers of eating disorders but one thing they don t tell you is that with an eating disorder you feel tired all day every day You feel sick insubstantial and nauseous You think it will make people understand that you are in pain but most of them won t notice your pain They will just get angry at you The only way to tell the world that you are in pain is to use your words Tell people that you are in pain and that you need help Tell everyone until someone listens Someone WILL listen Plus if your body doesn t have the calories it needs to respond to help the help will be useless A brain and heart need energy to heal So fuck everyone and worry about yourself No one has cared about you and so you have
